Street dance world champions Flawless and English National Ballet dancers are teaming up for a show and nationwide tour. The collaboration involves 10 ballerinas dressed in eye-popping dance uniforms and 10 street dancers, joining forces in a mix of street dance, acrobatics and ballet.
The show and the tour echo the hit movie Street Dance 3D in which Flawless have recently appeared. In the film a street dance crew is forced to work with ballet dancers in exchange for rehearsal space in a ballet school. Soon the two disparate groups manage to forge an unlikely alliance and create an exciting new form of modern dance. This high-energy dance drama received mainly positive reviews and Flawless made their debut appearance to the big screen.
Flawless and English National Ballet members first met when both groups performed for the Queen at Buckingham Palace in a joint five-minute performance during the Peace One Day concert to mark the International Day of Peace. Ballet dancers looked amazing popping and locking in their lightweight dance uniforms while street dancers brought in true energy with their sharp moves.
Flawless were Britain's Got Talent finalists in 2009 and have become the true revelation of the show since Susan Boyle. Their extreme popularity is a sign that a form of dance that has been on the fringes in the UK finally reached maturity. Most of the group members have a background in performing arts and some of them are still in college, but they managed to fit dance around their jobs and commitments. The crew emphasise the value of hard work and dedication.
Today there are plenty of dance styles blending the elements of one style with the other: contemporary dance, lyrical dance and pop jazz, to name a few. While contemporary and lyrical dance is a blend of ballet and modern dance techniques, pop jazz draws on street dance techniques and classical jazz. Flawless and English National Ballet have gone even further by blending ballet and street dance techniques. The focus here is on improvisation combined with expression, posture and flexibility.
According to This Is London, English National Ballet members said their collaboration with Flawless is vital to keep their company fresh and modern. As soon as the show unfolds, a whole new audience is going to be introduced to the world of ballet.
