Jazz dance - an enduring love

Jazz dancing has a rich history. Up until the mid 1950’s jazz dance referred to a style of dancing that originated in the African American culture, stemming from the styles of the late 1800s’ to mid 1900’s. It is worth remembering that jazz dancing was actually referred to as such because it was dancing set to jazz music. However over time, jazz has evolved and has been influenced by a great many styles, including the Charleston, the Jitterbug and the Boogie Woogie, not forgetting Swing or the Lindy Hop. Jazz then moved onto Broadway, bringing it to the masses, and evolved further into the jazz that is taught today. For those familiar with the work of Bob Fosse, (Chicago and Cabaret are some of his better know works) it is clear why jazz is just as popular now as it has always been.

When it comes to the modern style of jazz, it is true to say that this form of dance has been heavily influenced by other dances styles including ballet, contemporary, lyrical and hip-hop - and of course jazz feeds into other dance styles too. In order to become successful as dancer it is essential to train. Like any form of exercise a warm up and stretching of the muscles so as to prevent injuries is very important. In addition, core strengthening exercises are often used for conditioning.

It is important to recognise that jazz dancers benefit from a sound working knowledge of ballet technique and, therefore, the jazz dance curriculum which is widely taught will commonly include various elements of ballet during the training period.

Dance starts at the feet and you will need the right jazz shoes to protect them. When looking to buy your first pair of jazz shoes it is important to follow a few simple guidelines. Remember that depending on your age, your feet may grow in the future; although this only really applies to the younger dancer it is still worth bearing in mind, as consideration can save you money in the long run and help to protect the dancers feet and ankles as they perform the technical steps required in this style of dancing. Jazz dancers often wear leather jazz shoes, they often come in brown or more commonly black leather, and these jazz shoes help the dancer move smoothly when executing turns and other complex steps. Remembering that the body’s centre is the focal point from which all movement emanates, it is key to have great balance something that a good pair of jazz shoes will assist with.

Jazz shoes are not just for jazz dance, they can sometimes be sued for other forms of dance as well although their name might suggest otherwise. It is easy to locate a wide range of dance shoes online. Often the best value can be obtained through internet retailers, and you get the benefit of being able to browse at any time of the day or night from the comfort of your own home!
