Maybe people are often confused about what exactly unitards are. It is a one-piece clothing item with long-legs and often long sleeves. It differs from a leotard in that it has long legs which a leotard does not. It could well be considered to be a combination of a leotard and tights. Let's take a look at the versatile garment that is the unitard...
Who Wears Unitards?
Unitards are worn by people who require total body coverage but still need to remain as flexible as possible - this includes many performers such as acrobats and dancers.
However, it is not simply dancers that favour the one-piece item - superheroes in movies, a number of musicians and some sports-people have been known to sport the garment, enjoying the freedom of movement that it allows.
Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the rock band Queen, is perhaps the most well known musician to have worn a unitard during many of his concerts in the late 1970s. Kevin Barnes, part of the band Montreal, is also said to have worn one.
In 1985, tennis star Anne White famously wore a unitard during the Women's Singles Championship at Wimbledon.
Perfect for Dancing
Despite being worn by many people in sports, music and frequently in superhero movies (think Superman, Badger and Nexus), it is still most commonly sported by dancers. The unitard is great for dancing as they allow the dancer to move more fluidly and it increases flexibility. The garment was originally popular in the 1970s – its popularity took a slight dip but is now more popular than ever. The main dance movies that have graced our screens in the past few years have meant more of us are attending dance classes and purchasing unitards. Their popularity is likely to increase even further over the next few years.
Fashionable New Versions
Although the unitards that are being widely sold now are the same as those that were popular in the 1970s, new versions are available in a massive range of colours and are also made from a new fabric which allows the body to breathe better when it sweats which will make you much more comfortable.
Where unitards were once worn solely for practicality, they are now seen as very chic and are a modern fashion statement. They are sometimes even featured in glossy fashion magazines and are often seen on music videos. So when you walk into your dance class sporting your new unitard you need not feel like you are wearing something straight from the 1970s – this is a great look which is at the height of fashion!
