It is very important when getting involved in ballet to wear the correct attire in order to flourish in the dance and this attire consists of the ballet tutu, the leotard and ballet slippers.
A ballet tutu is a skirt worn as part of the attire a ballet performance and will often have a bodice attached. It could consist of one layer, hang down, or have a number of different layers. There are a number of different types of ballet tutu and these are the Romantic Tutu, the Classical Tutu and the Balanchine/Karinska Tutu.
The Romantic Tutu is a skirt which is bell-shaped and made of tulle which is a kind of sheer and delicate thin silk. In terms of length it is usually three quarter length and the bottom of the tutu will usually be a little longer than knee-length.
The Classical Tutu is very short in length and has quite a stiff texture and will consist of a number of different layers with a slight bell shape. This is probably the most common type of ballet tutu today and is often favoured as a fashion item amongst young girls and women.
The Balanchine Tutu is commonly referred to as the “powder puff” and is a very short skirt – it is loosely tacked to give a soft and full appearance.
The Leotard
A leotard is a unisex skin-tight one-piece garment that covers the torso area but it leaves the legs free to move. They are a vital piece of ballet attire as they allow the dancer to retain flexibility which is crucial in order to be able to perform certain moves and jumps. The elastic properties of the leotard mean freedom of movement is increased. The leotard is usually worn under the ballet tutu and over a pair of tights. They come in many different colours so you are bound to find something that suits your tastes.
Ballet Shoes
Together with your ballet tutu and leotard, purchasing a quality pair of ballet shoes is a must. With so many styles of ballet shoe out there on the market it can often be confusing when deciding which to purchase. Beginner ballet dancers will usual require a pair of soft ballet shoes, sometimes referred to as slippers. They come in three different fabrics – leather, canvas and satin and which one you decide to go with really depends on two things – which you feel most comfortable in and what you budget is. Leather ballet shoes are more expensive but they are also more durable, giving your more wear out of your shoes. Canvas ballet shoes are cheaper and less durable but they are also easier to maintain and keep clean as you can easily just throw them into the washing machine. It is crucial that your ballet shoes fit and that they are not too small. If they are too tight fitting then you will have no room to move your toes which may prevent you from performing certain moves and jumps.
